I am currently working on a test for my religion class, and one of the questions is asking us to explain why someone would complain about science and psychology playing a bigger role in religion today. I believe that science can either be a great work of God or a burden on God's word. Sciences have the ability to take so much away from what a religion really is. This is according to which scientist you are talking to, of course. Being a Christian, God is who I depend on for my salvation, to give my burdens to, and to try and pattern my life after. A general scientific belief, being that the world was created by natural processes, takes God out of the picture altogether. It depends on "mother nature" to be at the center of everything that happens in the world. I'm sure this is not the mentality of all scientists, but this tends to be how many see the world. I know this is what I have been taught in school. This mentality takes Christianity away completely. Some of the theories being created is making God seem like He is a myth. A being that has been created by someone's mind. It seems like some scientists are taking advantage of their knowledge to come up with any explanation in attempt to prove that God isn't real. Don't get me wrong, science is greatly needed in the world in order to cure illnesses, warn people about weather, and so much more, but why is it that some go against all the things that God has given us? The Bible tells us exactly what we need to know, and we have to have faith in that. By going by the Bible, scientists could learn many truths about the Earth. Science and religion has the ability to do great things if they come together.
I have taken at least six Psychology classes while being in college, and it is not easy to handle what general Psychology contains, while being a Christian. One of my Christian Psychology teachers once stated that she wishes that she didn't have to teach some of the theories because of the way it made God seems. A general psychology theory sees religion as being something that someone creates in their own mind in order to feel secure. God is described as being a "father figure" and that is why people wants Him to be real. Studies show that people wish for a God to protect them so much, they eventually create that figure in their mind. This theory describes religion as being "spiritual." Spiritual, meaning that a person is searching within themselves to find happiness, much like yoga. I can't categorize every psychologist in this category, but I wish that there wasn't those that went against God because God isn't someone that is in our minds, He is in our hearts and He is alive.
Like everyone in the world, scientists have the choice of whether they go against God or they follow Him. I hope to see more and more progress that demonstrates more evidence that shows God is indeed real. We must depend on those great minds that do the work of God in science to help us get to that point. God will give them the strength and praise for doing this.
